How we calculated it
About the Test Grade Calculator
Test Grade Calculator converts points earned and total possible points into a percentage and, where supported, a letter-grade interpretation. It is useful for quickly checking exams, quizzes and assignments scored by points.
The percentage calculation is objective, but letter-grade cutoffs are not universal. Use the grading scale supplied by the school or instructor.
How to Use the Test Grade Calculator
- Enter points earned.
- Enter total possible points.
- Calculate the percentage.
- Apply the correct course grading scale if a letter grade is needed.
How the Calculation Works
Test percentage = points earned ÷ total possible points × 100.
If the calculator displays a letter grade, it compares the percentage with the selected grade-boundary table rather than assuming one universal scale.
Worked example
Test Grade Calculator Worked Example
42 points out of 50
Test grade = 42÷50×100 = 84%.
Result guide
Understanding Your Test Grade Calculator Result
The percentage shows the share of available points earned. It does not show how heavily the test affects the overall course grade. If the test uses weighted questions, partial credit or sections with different point values, the points-based percentage still works as long as the earned and possible totals already reflect those weights accurately.

Assumptions and Limitations
- Points earned and possible points refer to the same assessment.
- Total possible points is greater than zero.
- Letter-grade cutoffs are supplied separately or selected correctly.
Practical tip
Using This Result in Practice
If the assessment is weighted heavily in the course, combine the test result with the course weighting rather than judging its impact from the percentage alone. Keep raw points as well as the rounded percentage so a later gradebook calculation can use the exact score.
